Department of Cat Genetics: Field Manual

1. Genetics 101: Dominant vs. Recessive

Mewgenics doesn't just randomise kittens; it uses a simplified version of real-world Mendelian Genetics. Every cat carries two genes for each trait (one from the Sire, one from the Dame). Some genes are dominant (likely to be expressed) while others are recessive (hidden unless both parents have it).

  • Dominant Traits: Solid colors, Round heads. These will appear if even one parent passes the gene.
  • Recessive Traits: Spots, Flat faces. Both parents must carry this gene for the kitten to show it.

2. How Stat Inheritance Works

Stats like Strength and Agility aren't pure RNG. The base stat of a kitten is roughly the average of both parents, subject to a "Variance Roll".

Formula: (Sire Stat + Dame Stat) / 2 Variance.

Use this calculator to check if a specific pairing has a high enough ceiling to produce the super-cat you need for late-game content. Breeding two weak cats will rarely result in a strong one, no matter how lucky you get.

3. Mutation Risk Assessment

Mutations are a double-edged sword. While they are the only way to get distinct physical traits like wings or extra eyes, they often come with severe stat penalties.

Low Risk (0-10%)
Safe breeding. High stat retention. Low chance of physical mutation.
High Risk (50%+)
"Mad Science" territory. High chance of crippling stat defects, but high chance of Rare Body/Head types.

4. Rare Traits Catalog

Looking for something specific? Here are the rarest traits currently discovered in the game and how to get them:

  • Cyclops Eye: Requires high mutation factor or two recessive "monocular" genes.
  • Skeletal Fur: A cosmetic mutation that often lowers Vitality but looks terrifyingly cool.
  • Elemental Born: Cats that are immune to Fire, Ice, or Shock. Usually requires breeding parents found in specific elemental biomes.
  • Gigantism: A massive boost to Strength but reduces Agility to almost zero.

5. House Management: Don't Hoard!

Your house has limited space (`Capacity`). Overcrowding leads to stress, sickness, and rapid stat decay. It is better to have 4 elite cats than 20 mediocre ones.

Pro Tip: Use the "Crio-Freeze" feature to store genetic templates (cats with maxed-out single stats) for later breeding projects without taking up active floor space.

6. The Ethics of "Culling"

Let's be real: not every experiment is a success. In Mewgenics, you must be ruthless. If a kitten is born with negative traits (like "Lazy" or "Frailty") and low stats, it is often a resource drain to keep it.

Release them to the wild or... utilize other game mechanics to remove them from your gene pool. Keeps your bloodline pure and your food costs low.

7. Elemental Breeding

Stats aren't everything. For late-game bosses, Elemental Resists are key. Breeding a Fire-element cat with an Ice-element cat typically results in a "Neutral" kitten, cancelling out the benefits.

Stick to Monotyping: Breed Fire x Fire to amplify the resistance and damage traits. Hybridization is generally weak in the current meta.

8. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can dead cats be cloned?

No, once a cat dies (perma-death), its genes are lost forever unless you have a previous offspring carrying them.

Does inbreeding matter?

Yes. Breeding close relatives significantly increases the "Mutation Factor" (hidden value), leading to higher rates of defects.

What is the max stat cap?

Currently, base stats cap at 100, but gear and temporary buffs can push effective stats higher during missions.
